Seed Production

Not to brag, but our seeds are bigger – and cleaner – in Mackenzie County.

Mackenzie County generally produces much higher thousand-kernel weights. Producers who purchase pedigreed seed perceive an appreciable difference in vigour from those seeds. Our farmers grow grains of greater weight and higher protein levels. The oil seeds we grow are higher in omega content than their counterparts farther south.

Due to our geographic location, lower temperatures during production season, wind direction, “newer” land, and a forest break to the south, crops in Mackenzie County have lower disease pressure than regions to the south. As a result, buyers of our pedigreed seed can be reassured they are less likely to bring new or additional crop diseases onto their farms.

Alberta is a key player in Canada’s seed industry, accounting for more than a quarter of Canada’s pedigreed seed acres.
